Growing interest in Adaptive Reuse of heritage properties as a counter-balance to recent increases in new development has municipalities increasing staff to address the impacts of new development on the history of communities. MW HALL CORPORATION has recently been involved working with Sequoia Grove Homes, developers/owners of a property that contains existing heritage buildings.
1000 Elgin Mills Road East in Richmond Hill, Ontario is a former farm property with large acreage plus an original wood framed 1850 residence and a field stone outbuilding. We were commissioned to prepare a conservation/restoration plan for Designated Heritage structures on the property and an adaptive reuse plan that provides a contemporary building addition which would be sold to a new owner as an estate property located adjacent to planned new townhouses and multi-storey condominium apartment units. The design for the project includes careful restoration of the original Georgian styled farm house exterior, restoration/reuse of a stone outbuilding as an outdoor dining pavilion, and a 2-storey contemporary-style addition to the farmhouse separated from the restored historic building by a tinted glass entry vestibule. The project is conceived as a transitional project with the historic farm house facing the road in its insitu location, transitioning to the contemporary styled townhouses and condominium apartments.
