Heritage Building, Adaptive Reuse of former bank building to offices, Los Angeles, California. Mark Hall was principal in charge at ARCHIPLAN urban design collaborative for this project.
Originally constructed in 1927 as a bank, this commercial building was purchased and renovated by ARCHIPLAN in 1982, to house the firm's corporate offices. Stripped of most of its decorative moldings and other historical ornamentation over the years, rehab design focused on re-establishing the original character of the building without necessarily reproducing this missing historical detail.
New partitioning, electrical, mechanical systems, acoustic treatment and lighting were added to create a contemporary working environment. The original hand painted, coffered ceiling, badly damaged and covered with fluorescent lighting was repaired and carefully restored. Exterior rehabilitation was limited to sandblasting, patching and painting to highlight the existing architectural character of the building.
